Born in Sheffield George Hammond Steel studied at the Sheffield School of Art, later attending art classes in Birmingham and London. He was a painter as well as stained glass designer. The coastline and harbors of Cornwall and East Anglia served as great inspiration to the artist where he painted extensively, creating the atmospheric landscapes that he is best known for. Featuring impasto, the paintings are rich in texture and Hammond Steel’s dynamic brushstrokes create a sense of spontaneity and movement to his compositions. His work has been widely exhibited, including at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Leicester Galleries and Paris Salon.
