OONA CAMPBELL

Oona Campbell Biography

Oona Campbell was born in 1967. She studied Visual and Performing Arts at
Brighton College of Art and Design, graduating in 1989. Since then Oona has become an established and highly regarded contemporary British artist. Oona has a deep affinity with Scotland, she is fascinated by the quality of light created by the ever changing weather. Oona visits Scotland two or three times a year in search of fresh source material. Her favourite haunts are Isle of Skye, Mull, Glencoe and Dalwhinnie.

"When visiting these places it always seems like a new adventure and that I am being engulfed by a remoteness. I am drawn towards wild, beautiful, remote and isolated surroundings."

Her technical handling of paint is marvellous. She usually works on several paintings at a time, the layering of pigment taking weeks to dry. She is a master at juxtaposing colours which make the canvas resonate. Being mostly painted from memory in the studio, she encapsulates the feeling and emotion of a place. Many of the paintings depict the often very dramatic interplay of light between water and sky.

Oona revels in the contrast between living in London and long, solitary periods spent in Scotland. In the capital, the Thames is a continued source of inspiration, particularly at dawn and dusk when the light on the river changes so quickly.
