FRED CUMING

Fred Cuming Biography

Frederick (Fred) Cuming, RA, born 1930

Fred Cuming's impressive list of exhibitions and accolades is evidence that he is one of England's most well respected artists. Born in London in 1930, Cuming was educated at Sidcup School of Art and the Royal College of Art. In 1955 he won a scholarship which enabled him to travel to Rome.

Cuming takes an everyday scene and, through his subtle approach and through focusing on light and tone, he lends it an elevated atmosphere. His subjects are often orientated around the sea, harbours, marshland, ships and figures wondering on beaches as well as studios and garden interiors. These subjects are painted loosely with a restricted and light palette creating a dreamy affect. Cuming wrote for the RA: 'I am not interested in pure representation. My work is about responses to the moods and atmospheres generated by landscape, still life or interior.'

Cuming is a member of the New English Art Club, an Associate of the Royal College of Art and was elected full Royal Academician in 1974. In 2001 he was the featured artist in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, with an entire gallery dedicated to his work.
