JOCK MACINNES

Jock MacInnes Biography

Based in Scotland and until recently a tutor at Glasgow School of Art, MacInnes describes himself as 'a modernist at heart' who has gathered information and inspiration from both Continental European (Matisse, Braque, Morandi) and English artists (Nicholson, Scott and Wallis) of the early part of the twentieth century. The St Ives School, both in terms of subject matter and technique, has played a particularly formative role in MacInnes' artistic development.

MacInnes has the ability to create mood and atmosphere not just from his drawing and painting but from the texture of the surface on which he works. He prepares all his own gesso boards and canvases and it is his great skill in manipulating this surface that helps to give the work its special character; he doesn't just paint onto a surface, he makes marks and paints into it.
