A high proportion of the works shown in the exhibition John Piper (Marlborough Fine Art, September-October 1975) bearing dates from the same year as the show focus on fields, vegetation and ancient boundary walls in the vicinity of the artist's holiday home at Garn Fawr (often abbreviated to 'GF' in Piper's inscriptions) near Strumble Head in Pembrokeshire, Wales. This work is closely related to the image Piper provided for the cover of a 1975 booklet promoting the activities of the Council for the Protection of Rural England yet the inscription on the present work reveals that the subject is actually deep in West Wales!
