Brodick Bay is situated on the east coast of Arran, a little further south of Corrie. Goatfell, the highest mountain on Arran, rises behind the bay and in the first half of the 20th Century Brodick Bay, with its beach and castle, was a popular destination in the summer months. Rowing boats and fishing rods could be hired and beach huts extended along the bay.
Milne is known to have painted at least four variations of this view. The different versions of Brodick Bay show Milne experimenting with different palettes and altering the mountainous landscape behind the bay revealing he was not afraid to use some artistic license in order to bring a composition together satisfactorily.
