Another of Mary re-visiting a subject, Breakfast is based on a 1969 oil painting of the same title. The main difference between the two works is a simplification of colour and shading in the later work which creates a stronger overall contrast. This is particularly noticeable with the knife in the foreground. In the earlier work, the shadow from the bread falls across the blade of the knife and the shading along the handle and blade blends in with the purple, blue and brown of the table. In the later work, the knife handle is darker and the blade much brighter, resulting in a knife that stands out dramatically against the more limited colour-tones of the table.
