Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner
Christopher Andreae, in his book on the artist, writes that he believes the appearance of volcanoes in Mary's work may be a reference to her first trip to Sicily with Julian in 1949. Although they weren't to marry until 1951, this was a sort of 'honeymoon' for the couple. Mary was bitterly disappointed that Etna did not erupt whilst they were there.
