A significant artistic influence in Mary's life was Vladimir Polunin, a tutor from her days as student at the Slade. Polunin had worked for the Diaghilev Ballet and painted Picasso's set designs for La Tricorne. He inspired Mary to take up theatre design after leaving the Slade. Often Mary's work have an air of theatre surrounding them, even down the characters that inhabit the landscape/stage. These works tell a story but it is up to us, the viewers, to interpret it.
