London, Portland Gallery, Mary Fedden Exhibition, June 2011, no. 1
PROVENANCE: Private Collection
Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan fell in love on a visit to Sicily in 1949. They travelled all over the island for more than two months. Mary described it as 'the most wonderful thing that had ever happened to me, and almost the most wonderful thing that ever did happen'. One of Mary's lasting memories of the trip was a romantic night picnic with friends under the brilliant full moonlight. This painting, the earliest in the exhibition shows a night view of a piazza in Sicily.
