During the summer of 1961, Piper and his wife Myfanwy explored the Pembrokeshire countryside in search of a holiday home. The following year they acquired a ruined cottage on the slope of Garn Fawr near Strumble Head. They bought another cottage to act as studio and fourteen acres of land. The surrounding countryside of hills and fields divided into patchwork by walls of slate from the local quarry was to be a source of inspiration to Piper.
