The Estate of Edward Seago
Seago was able to paint East Anglian scenes from memory - the expedition on HM Yacht Britannia offered him the chance to observe a different light and the completely unfamiliar scenery of icebergs and whaling stations. After leaving New Zealand the ship travelled via Antarctica, islands in the South Atlantic and West Africa. Seago was captivated by the glacial scenery of Antarctica and worked hard during the voyage, painting at least sixty works. He painted mainly in oils as the sub-zero temperatures made painting in watercolour impossible.
