St Tropez appears to be the first place Maclauchlan Milne visited on the Cote d'Azur. He continued to exhibit paintings of the town at the RSA and RGI up until 1954 (and one posthumously).

When painting the harbour at St. Tropez Milne either positioned himself out on the peer looking back towards the town with the hills and Citadel of St. Tropez in the distance or, as in this painting he looked out to sea with the coastline of Sainte-Maxime in the distance. The wine boats would arrive from Toulon and Milne captured the brightly painted vessels unloading their barrels onto the sun-drenched peer.
