Maclauchlan Milne spent the large part of the 1920s and '30s in France, first in Loire Valley and then in the Cote D'Azur. St. Tropez attracted him more than any other town. He painted the town's harbour and back streets, embracing the Mediterranean colours. Milne was in his prime and the light and architecture had a long lasting impact on his work. Although the outbreak of war in 1939 forced him to return to Scotland, he continued to exhibit scenes of St. Tropez at the RSA and RGI up until 1954.
