John Duncan Fergusson was born and brought up in Leith, Edinburgh but his most exciting works were often executed in France. Having been drawn to Paris from Edinburgh, not only to escape economic hardship at home but to experience the tuition at the renowned Parisian academies, Fergusson found himself enraptured by the art scene he found there. Rubbing shoulders with Picasso and other eminent artists in the café society of Paris, Fergusson also spent many summers exploring the coast of Normandy. He was particularly taken with the resort of Paris-Plage and from the early 1900s would often travel there accompanied by his fellow Scotsman and artist Samuel John Peploe, and later on with his muse and lover Anne Estelle Rice, to paint 'en plein air'. The quality of light on land and water at the resort increased the tonality of his work and Paris Plage shows an important development in Fergusson's artistic output at a time when he was becoming increasingly aware of the work of Matisse and the Fauves.
