The nude was an enduring theme in Fergusson's paintings and La Force was painted in the same year as Rhythm, the painting that shared its name with the Arts publication launched in 1911 by John Middleton Murray and Michael Sadler, with Fergusson as Arts editor.
Rhythm was to become a driving force in Fergusson's work. It was, for him, the very essence of life, perhaps, influenced by the Ballet Russes of the 1900's. The Nudes of this period reflect this vitality in both their strength and solidity, creating a real celebration of the human form.
In 1911-13 Fergusson painted Les Eus, a large scale canvas featuring six nude figures dancing, it is one of his most important paintings and a seminal piece in the history of modern Scotish painting.
