Fergusson spent long periods of his life in France and lived there between 1907 to 1914 and again between 1929 to 1939. During the 1930's, when this painting was produced, he made regular summer trips to the South of France and continued to do so until his death in 1961.

He exhibited widely in France and his work was well received.
