Provenance:
Purchased by McNeill Read in 1921
Thence to Isobel Alexander who was a relation of McNeill Read's business partner Duncan MacDonald
Literature:
Tom Hewlett & Duncan Macmillan, F.C.B. Cadell, Lund Humphries, London, 2011, plate 173
This work was painted at 6 Ainslie Place where Cadell moved in 1920. This move marked a shift in the artist's style. He painted the front door of his new home in vivid ultramarine and the walls of his drawing room a rich mauve colour. In turn, the paintings from this period took on a tighter structure and were vividly coloured. Cadell's highly polished floor and furniture and many mirrors reflect the carefully chosen objects found in his studio at Ainslie Place.
