Redpath described the Canary Islands after a trip there in 1959: 'The country inland was volcanic and brown...purples and browns and black'. Returning from her visit to the Canary Islands Redpath brought this palette with her - her still life paintings in the 1960s often display the colour range shown in this landscape painting.
